Lamictal

Lamictal, or how it is also called, Lamotrigine, is an anti-epileptic drug (anticonvulsant). It is prescribed for adults and children after age of 2. The main goal of Lamictal is to treat seizures. It can be prescribed alone or in combination with some other drugs.

When taking Lamictal with Depakene or Depakote or if a person is allergic to seizure medications, Lamictal may cause dangerous for life skin rash. Immediately consult with your doctor if you experience high fever, swollen glands, red skin rash, peeling. It is important to identify if this drug is suitable for you or not.

During the time of taking Lamictal, different suicidal thoughts may appear and a patient must be always under control of a professional. Consult with your doctor at once in case of the following symptoms appearance: behavior changes, anxiety, depression, hyperactive (physically and mentally) or suiciding thoughts, desire to hurt yourself.

Sudden stop of taking Lamictal without doctor’s agreement may also reflect negatively: the seizures may increase. Medication termination should be slow, dosage must be decreased every day before you quit this medication completely. In case of an emergency it would be advisable to carry a medical bracelet stating that you take Lamotrigine. Before taking any other medicine, your doctor should be aware that you are also taking Lamictal or any other seizure medication. The patient should be more careful while driving or doing anything that requires high concentration.

Lamictal is not allowed to be taken during early pregnancy. There is a high risk that a baby will be born with a cleft lip or a cleft palate.

The drug was approved by FDA in 1994 for treatment of seizures. In 2003 it was approved for treatment of Bipolar I disorder. While taking sub-therapeutic doses, Lamictal causes antidepressant effect. But the off-label uses may include: neuropathy, cluster headache, migraines treatment.
